How important is the proper sterilization of dental equipment?

A recent report by ABC News revealed that a dentist in Oklahoma exposed 7,000 patients to Hepatitis and HIV by improperly sterilizing his equipment. Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV are viruses that are spread through infectious blood and other bodily fluids.

After conducting an investigation of the accused dentist's office, the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry found numerous sterilization and cross-contamination issues. Among other allegations, investigators found that an autoclave machine for sterilizing dental instruments that is meant to be checked each month had not been checked in six years.

At Atlas Park Dental, the health and safety of our patients is our top priority. Our in-house, state-of-the-line sterilization equipment assures that we treat each patient in the safest and cleanest way possible. Our office utilizes the Midmark M9 UltraClave® Automatic Sterilizer—a machine that uses a Steam-Flush Pressure-Pulse Air Removal System to ensure optimal steam penetration of our equipment for a reliable clean. Additionally, we have a STATIM 2000 cassette autoclave on premises. The STATIM 2000's sterilizers have a biological effectiveness that has been proven in tests for both hollow and solid dental instruments at many internationally recognized institutes in Canada, the United States, and Europe. And with the aseptic transfer of instruments, we carry the tools directly from the sterilizer to your dental chair while wrapped in a fresh, hygienic pouch.

Furthermore, Atlas Park Dental has invested in becoming a certified participant in the Spore-Wise Sterilizer Monitoring Program that facilitates routine biological monitoring of the equipment used for sterlization and assures our patients the highest quality of care.

In the event that you arrive at a dentist's office and do not see dental barriers—a blue, tape-like material attached to equipment and surfaces to reduce cross-contamination—or instruments wrapped in bags that are opened in front of you, it is recommended that you leave and reschedule an appointment elsewhere. Your well-being is important to us, both inside and outside our office.
